Make it stand out.
Introduction
I’m David McConnell, founder and bladesmith at North Woods Forge LLC. From my shop in the Michigan north woods, I hand-forge working knives and heirloom blades designed for the field, the river, and the kitchen. Every piece starts at the anvil—drawn out, heat-treated, and finished by hand—so it can be trusted for a lifetime of use.
What I Make
Field & hunting knives, camp/bushcraft blades, and kitchen cutters
Crucible/wootz and high-carbon steels, with occasional pattern experiments
Thoughtful ergonomics with custom handles (African blackwood, amboyna burl, stabilized hardwoods) and copper/brass details, pins, and inlays
Purpose-built grinds, clean plunges, and stout geometry meant to be sharpened and used
Custom home decor (door hardware and hinges, pot racks, drawer pulls, staircase handrails, cup racks, and hooks, along with many other household items!
Accomplishments
A growing body of custom commissions and repeat clients who rely on my blades for everyday carry and serious work
Showcased at regional markets and craft shows, where customers can handle edges, check balance, and order bespoke builds
Ongoing material R&D—from crucible/wootz melts and heat-treat schedules to handle construction and corrosion control—to push pattern, performance, and durability forward
Finalist on Forged In Fire. Season 4 Episode 7
Who I Am as a Craftsman
I’m a function-first maker: edge stability, heat treat, and ergonomics lead every decision. I believe a knife should disappear in the hand, hold an edge with confidence, and sharpen up fast in the field. My process blends traditional forging with disciplined metallurgy—controlled thermal cycles, precise quench, and careful temper—then slows down for the details: hand-rubbed finishes, chamfered edges, fitted pins, and balanced weight.
At North Woods Forge, I don’t chase perfection—I build reliability. If a blade carries my maker’s mark, it’s because I’ve tested it, tuned it, and I’m proud to see it used.
